 About the Team

 

  • The uMetal team provides the on-demand metal service to keep Uber’s innovation running. uMetal builds the base layer of compute resources for developers, riders, drivers, and self-driving cars rely on every day. Supporting billions of rides and fast-forwarding to the future of self-driving cars, Uber’s data center team has some of the most interesting challenges around.
  • The Data Center Engineering team designs, builds, and operates Uber’s global production data facilities. We’re a small team of engineers and operations focused on delivering and maintaining hyperscale data centers. We work closely with other uMetal teams to innovate on builds with the latest hardware and networking technologies. We’re driven by the challenge of high densities and maximizing efficiency in data centers to provide compute power serve riders and developers.

 

What You’ll Do

 

Data Center Engineering, Strategic Engineering

  • Collaborate with Uber Hardware Engineering to understand future deployments and data center requirements
  • Collaborate with internal teams in setting standards for racks to optimize cooling
  • Optimize physical arrangement of compute, storage, and networking equipment within racks and white spaces based on cooling requirements
  • Drive innovation in the data center at Uber as well as across the industry

 

Data Center Engineering, Design & Build-Out

  • Review design of future spaces for operational uptime and reliability
  • Prepare conceptual design documents, as needed, illustrating cooling and topologies requirements
  • Prepare mechanical design criteria and specifications for future data center white space builds and facilities
  • Prepare detailed design documents and specifications for white space containment systems for competitive bidding and implementation
  • Oversee mechanical build-out of white space (cooling and containment) to meet schedule, deployment needs, system flexibility and growth
  • Assist in managing relationships with service providers, contractors, vendors and suppliers at each data center location

 

Data Center Engineering, Operations

  • Collaborate with uMetal infrastructure operation teams to improve data center efficiency and operations
  • Support and collaborate with operations within data center engineering and uMetal teams
  • Provide communication to internal and external teams about system operation and limitations, as well as scheduled activities and maintenances
  • Review and develop Method of Procedures and Change Management Requests for maximum system reliability
  • Review mechanical PMs for approval and communicate activities with potential impacts to external and internal teams
  • Review data center commissioning scripts and participate in commissioning activities, as needed (e.g. Integrated Systems Test)
  • Participate in incident review meetings, root cause analysis investigations and discussions
  • Respond on an as-needed basis during data center outages and incidents
  • Review operation configurations in compliance with SLAs for deployment
  • Review with internal teams and reliability engineering to ensure continued service delivery to Uber platforms during infrastructure reconfigurations, maintenances and retrofits
  • Travel to data center sites for system audits, engineering studies, as-built updates and commissioning
  • Prepare cost analysis and business cases for white space retrofits and infrastructure improvements

 

What You’ll Need

 

  • B.S. in mechanical engineering, or architectural engineering with an HVAC system emphasis or equivalent engineering degree
  • Minimum 8 years of professional experience in data center mechanical HVAC design, construction and operations (Mechanical Engineering Professional Registration is preferred)
  • Strong communication, organization, and project management skills
  • Ability to self-serve, investigate, and execute with minimal instruction
  • Deep domain experience and best practices in:
    • Cooling:  Theory, methods and efficiency (PUE)
    • Understanding and working knowledge of mechanical air-side and water-side systems for mission critical environments and various data center HVAC topologies
      • Air-side design and distribution
      • Wet-side design and distribution (chilled and condenser water systems)
      • CRAC and CRAH design and distribution
    • Understanding of mechanical design and operational changes with varying rack power density
    • Knowledge of industry standards, ASHRAE, mechanical / building codes, energy codes (e.g. Title 24), and life safety standards (e.g. NFPA)
  • Mid level domain experience and best practice in:
    • Power Distribution:  Three-phase, conditioning, and distribution from utility to chip
      • Understanding of mission critical power distribution, UPS, PDU and various data center electrical topologies
      • Understanding of electrical design and operational changes with varying rack power density
      • Knowledge of industry standards, NEC, building codes, energy codes (e.g. Title 24), and life safety fire alarm standards (e.g. NFPA)
    • Networking & Structured Cabling Distribution:  Basics of all layers plus cabling, optics and supporting infrastructure
      • Understanding of mission critical structured cabling distribution to coincide with networking topology
      • Understanding of various components within structured cabling designs
      • Knowledge of industry standards, BICSI and RCDD standards
  • White Space:  Rack and floor plan optimization
  • DCIM:  Monitoring protocols, data analysis and reporting

 

Expectations

 

  • Collaborate and work with internal Uber teams and Data Center Engineering staff, and carry out responsibilities with guidance from senior staff
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to streamline the communication process for greater productivity between teams
  • Posses cross functional knowledge of mission critical systems, strong trouble-shooting and analytical skills
  • Experience in mechanical load management within mission critical facilities
  • Aspiration and desire to improve efficiency of mechanical systems
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD (or Revit) and CFD analysis software
  • Travel to data center sites 15% to 20%
