About the role:
You will be part of the team that serves Udemy Discovery Content to millions of students. Discovery API is a core part of the Discovery Experience in Udemy with the mission of getting students to the right content. Team works together with other engineering teams, product managers, to provide robust, maintainable and reliable and scaling to ever-growing user, performance and optimization are among the top priorities of the Discovery API Team.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you are expected to develop robust, viable and scalable solutions; demonstrating the traits of an experienced software professional. The expectation from the position is not limited to individual contribution only; you are also expected to contribute the overall design of the system.  Personal Development is an essential part of your job. You are always encouraged to broaden your and your team’s vision with new technologies, tools, and methodologies

Here's what you'll be doing:

    • Design, develop, test, and release APIs to serve Udemy’s discovery content to millions of students through internal and external stakeholders.
    • Collaborate with product managers, designers and engineers to identify opportunities and implement solutions that provide positive value to our students and our business.
    • Plan, organize, and complete work within agile sprints.  
    • Communicate effectively on progress and meeting expectations.
    • Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and develop features and solutions that scale.
    • Use best software development practices and processes to coach and mentor junior engineers to become proficient developers.
    • Contribute to a team culture that values openness, quality, robustness, and scalability while fostering innovation.
    • Identify and evaluate new technologies that improve performance, maintainability and elegance of our software implementation.

We're excited about you because you have:

    • BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent.
    • 4+ years of software development experience
    • Experience in developing web applications and programming languages (e.g. Python, Java, HTTP, HTTPS).
    • Superior design and architecture knowledge, as well as familiarity with object oriented design patterns.
    • Engineering process expertise, with a full understanding of Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) principles.
    • Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem solving skills, with attention to detail and effective communication skills.

Nice to haves:

    • Experience with middleware, web services and related standards such as HTTP, REST and SOAP.
    • Experience with Web Framework ORMs (e.g. Django, Rails, etc.).
    • Knowledge of concurrency, resiliency, and caching.
    • Experience with Testing methods, including unit, integration tests and API tests.
