Director of Platform Engineering

San Francisco, CA, US

We are looking for an engineering leader to head up the Udemy Platform Team. This team is responsible for defining, designing and implementing the platform services that all the other engineers in the company use. We have achieved a lot of success with our current architecture and are now thinking about scaling to the next 10x level of usage. Our goal is to offer a state of the art platform where engineers can build, deploy, observe and debug microservices both in public clouds as well as in our own data centers.

Here’s what you’ll be doing:

    • First Quarter: Organizing the team, defining roles, responsibilities and the forward looking architecture. Making decision on technology and framework choices and delivering a proof of concept of the service architecture.
    • First 6 months: Making key hires to augment the team as necessary. Getting production ready deployment of platform and deploying some non-crucial production services on platform.
    • First Year: Delivering a new way to build services for all engineers at Udemy as well as having all new services be built on this platform. Helping with refactoring key parts of the application and migrating them to the new platform. You'll also be helping evangelise the engineering work being done in the company around the industry.

We’re excited about you because you have:

    • Real world, first hand experience either building a modern service architecture, or having used such an architecture.
    • Hands on experience with microservices (academic knowledge is also appreciated).
    • Familiarity with the problems with operating microservices and knowledge of industry (open source or other) solutions in the market.
    • Solid Systems Design thinking that is demonstrable via past experience.
    • Experience with Go as the language for backend systems.
    • Passion for craftsmanship in all aspects of engineering - design, documentation, tooling, performance, implementation.
    • Leadership that is grounded in empathy with people and expertise in the area.
    • Excellent communications skills.
