The Job
The Director of Underwriting will play a critical role on the Insurance Team working with the Director of Insurance Operations, Director of Insurance Product Development, and Director of Claims with all tasks related to the development and maintenance of sound underwriting guidelines and other tasks for each of Boost’s Insurtech Partners. Reporting directly to the Head of Insurance Strategy, the candidate will work cross-functionally with the Growth, Technology, and Legal Teams to implement and manage insurance programs for Boost’s Insurtech Partners, including due diligence, underwriting guideline development, audit and performance oversight, and adherence to program terms.  The candidate will regularly engage with Boost’s reinsurance partners during the program development phase and assist the Head of Insurance with facilitating fronting carrier and reinsurer communication and manage the high-level underwriting needs of Boost’s Insurtech Partners. 
The role requires a hungry, driven, and high-performing professional with the creative underwriting mind necessary to responsibly foster innovation in a highly-regulated market.
Anticipated Start Date: As soon as possible; no later than February 1, 2019.

Role & Responsibilities

    • Collaborate with the Growth, Technology, and Legal Teams with the research and diligence of potential Insurtech Partner’s insurance strategies
    • Develop and execute underwriting guidelines for Boost’s Insurtech Partners, coordinating with Boost’s reinsurance partners.
    • Work closely with the Directors of Insurance Operations and Insurance Product Development on program development with a focus on marketplace, reinsurance risk, and developing profit & loss projections for each program
    • Work with the other members of the Insurance Team and cross-functionally with the Growth, Technology, and Legal Teams to create and maintain an audit program for each Boost Insurtech Partner that ensures regulatory compliance and report on results monthly
    • Support Head of Insurance Strategy with all communication with Boost’s reinsurance and carrier partners.

Job Requirements

    • Must have 5-10 years of experience in either Property or Casualty lines in an underwriting role
    • Must have deep understanding of the reinsurance market; preferably experienced in either facultative or treaty reinsurance 
    • Must have working knowledge of the insurtech startup market and strong intellectual curiosity
    • Must have creative underwriting mind that is capable of finding solutions rather than defaulting to the status quo 
    • Must have strong quantitative and analytical skills
    • Must have strong interpersonal skills; both written and verbal
    • Must be willing to relocate to and work in New York full-time
    • Strong Preference for experience underwriting more than one line of business
    • Strong Preference for experience underwriting commercial casualty lines of business

Compensation & Benefits

    • $100,000 - $125,000 salary + equity commensurate with experience and company stage
