Description

World View (http://www.worldview.space/) is a high-energy early stage company based in Tucson, Arizona, working to capitalize on the commercial potential of a new class of maneuverable high-altitude balloons called Stratollites.  We're looking for ethical, enthusiastic people to join our Ground Operations team.

The Launch Director leads the launch preparation and launch activities of our high-altitude balloons.  The Launch Director reports to the Ground Operations Lead Chief.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervise, mentor, and train junior launch technicians on all launch processes and launch hardware maintenance and usage.
    • Perform and supervise regular inspections of all safety and operational equipment.
    • Maintain work records, maintenance and repair logs, vehicle inspection forms, daily work logs, checklists and processes, and other documentation.
  • Lead launch teams to prepare for and launch free flying high-altitude balloon operations.
  • Create launch documents including launch operations timeline, fill calculations, and resource planning.
  • Interface with Launch Logistics Lead to ensure remote operations are properly managed.
  • Interface with Safety Lead to improve launch processes to ensure safe operations.
  • Work with Engineering on launch system designs and launch processes to improve on launch success rate and resource efficiency.
Qualifications

Preferred Requirements and Skills:

  • Proven and effective team management skills.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to organize and plan.
  • Solve problems by gathering information and evaluating options.
  • Works productively with others in a collaborative, fast-paced team environment.
  • Strong familiarity of MS Office Products, including MS Project, Excel, Powerpoint, Word, and Outlook.
  • Launch operations is physically demanding.  The team leader must be able to lead by example:
    • Working overnight shifts
    • Ability to stand/walk for at least 4 consecutive hours.
    • Perform strenuous physical activities, such as recurrent walking, bending, climbing, and heavy lifting up to 70 lbs.
    • Lead remote operations for one to two weeks at a time.
    • Work in extreme heat and extreme cold conditions, with high winds, rain, snow.
  • Has clean driver’s license record and must pass a background check (drug testing included).
  • Demonstrated safe operation of heavy vehicles (CDL desired, but not required).
  • Work with pressurized gas products and related inflation systems.
  • Competently perform mechanical component fabrication.
  • Demonstrated safe use of hand tools such as, but not limited to, band saw, drill press, table saw, drills.
  • Must be located in Tucson, AZ
  • Must be a US Citizen

 

Preferred Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering or science field or relevant experience
  • 3+ years’ experience managing a team in a flight operations environment
  • Experience working with pressurized gas products including hydrogen.
  • Experience operating forklifts and/or cranes
  • Commercial Driving License (CDL); HAZMAT endorsement a plus
