Sr Systems Engineer

San Francisco, CA, US

We’re changing the way people think about transportation. Not that long ago we were just an app to request premium black cars in a few metropolitan areas. Now we’re a part of the logistical fabric of more than 600 cities around the world. Whether it’s a ride, a sandwich, or a package, we use technology to give people what they want, when they want it.

For the people who drive with Uber, our app represents a flexible new way to earn money. For cities, we help strengthen local economies, improve access to transportation, and make streets safer.

And that’s just what we’re doing today. We’re thinking about the future, too. With teams working on new modalities, self-driving cars and even urban air transportation, we’re in for the long haul. We’re reimagining how people and things move from one place to the next.

About the Role

A successful candidate will have experience with electrical, mechanical, and software systems as a principal technical contributor. They will have a demonstrated ability to formulate and implement system level plans for complex products. Ideal candidates will have deep understanding of the full product lifecycle, including development, test, production, and field deployment.

About System Safety

The System Safety team within Uber ATG is charged with ensuring that, at every stage of development, our self-driving vehicles are demonstrably safe when operating on public roads. We also hold primary responsibility for establishing durable specifications that will guide the integration of self-driving technology onto the Uber network at global scale.

Our safety experts apply analytical skills and expertise throughout the product development lifecycle. We work with software engineers, hardware engineers, test teams, and external partners to efficiently deliver the appropriate level of assurance for on-road, highly automated systems.

Successful candidates will:

  • Have extensive experience creating architectural and functional diagrams, concept of operations documents, verification plans, and detailed interface specifications and/or APIs.
  • Effectively apply methods of requirements management, and provide leadership in the creation of requirements within waterfall, v-model, or data driven product development environments.
  • Understand how to assess alternative solutions during development, weigh potential tradeoffs, and generate clear analysis for use in planning and decision making.
  • Recognize the differing goals and needs of rapid prototyping versus production at scale.
  • Communicate with external partners thoughtfully, and with deference to intellectual property and consideration of complex business relationships

Prior experience may include:

  • Product engineering or a product/program manager role requiring a strong technical background in an engineering discipline.
  • Success within a startup, focused research initiative, special project group, or other non-traditional engineering environment
  • Effective adaptation of system engineering standards and processes to new technology and/or unique applications
  • Familiarity with sophisticated, safety-critical software within automotive or another industry (e.g., aerospace, defense, medical, nuclear, transportation)
  • Exposure to functional safety standards such as ISO 26262
  • Regular collaboration, in person and via video conference, with international business partners
