About the Role


A successful candidate will have a strong background in software architecture, design, and an ability to steward complex initiatives within a large organization. They will have a demonstrated ability to formulate and implement system and technical plans for complex products. Ideal candidates will have deep understanding of the full product lifecycle, including development, test, production, and field deployment.


About System Safety


The System Safety team within Uber ATG is charged with ensuring that, at every stage of development, our self-driving vehicles are demonstrably safe when operating on public roads. We also hold primary responsibility for establishing durable specifications that will guide the integration of self-driving technology onto the Uber network at global scale.


Our safety experts apply analytical skills and expertise throughout the product development lifecycle. We work with software engineers, hardware engineers, test teams, and external partners to efficiently deliver the appropriate level of assurance for on-road, highly automated systems.

Successful candidates will:


  • Have a significant history working on large, complex software systems as an individual contributor.
  • Exhibit working knowledge of high integrity software systems in a safety/mission critical context.
  • Have extensive experience leading system/design/software Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA), or other risk assessments from inception.
  • Be experienced in the design and automation of effective system and software fault injection/failure injection fixtures, benches, and model based testing. e.g SIL/HIL
  • Have a successful track record of creating and improving processes for broader adoption and use.
  • Demonstrate creativity, practicality, and maturity in approaching system reliability and safety.
  • Have the professionalism and expertise required to blaze a trail where clear industry or regulatory guidance does not currently exist.
  • Be comfortable in environments with technical diversity and parallel development paths. Experience within a startup, focused research initiative, special project group, or other non-traditional engineering environment is highly desirable.
  • Quickly grasp or have previous experience with the core technological tenets of autonomous vehicles: machine learning-based perception and prediction, high definition mapping and localization, high-fidelity simulation, etc.


Prior experience may include:


  • Building novel safety cases and concepts for sophisticated automation, robotics, vehicles, and/or other cyber-physical systems
  • Training engineering teams and building relationships in support of safety processes and culture
  • Making/defending smart judgements and policy regarding residual system risk
  • Adapting traditional high-assurance safety processes to unique new technology applications, e.g.,
  • Tailoring functional safety standards such as ISO 26262 to highly automated driving
    • Applying standards/principles such as IEC 61508 (Functional Safety), DO-178 (178B or 178C - Safety Critical Software in Airborne Systems), Systems Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA), Radiation Safety “As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) etc. from another industry (e.g., aerospace, defense, medical) to a new or non-conventional domain.
