Director, Business Development & Wholesale at Minted

Reporting to the SVP Wholesale Business Development and Artist Relations, the Director of Business Development and Wholesale will help create large-scale retail distribution for Minted’s community of independent artists. Minted is the only company that brings independent designers and artists to the mass market in a scalable way. Our tech- and data-driven design crowdsourcing platform sources the freshest design from more than 13,000 independent artists from around the globe through open design competitions. Customers vote to tell us which designs and artwork to produce. Minted handles the manufacturing, marketing, distribution, and customer service on behalf of our artists, which ensures high, consistent quality and the ability to scale to serve some of the largest retailers in the world. We are focused on stationery, art, and home decor, but our design platform has the potential to expand into apparel and other design-driven categories. We offer our retail partners access to our artist community, our fresh designs, and our predictive consumer voting analytics, which helps retailers make better-informed bets on which designs to sell. Our current roster of national partners includes Target (where we sell greeting cards and other paper products), West Elm (where we sell wall art), Pottery Barn Kids (where we sell wall art and greeting cards), and PBteen (where we sell wall art). Stay tuned for several new exciting partnership announcements in the near future. You will play a central, early role in building our Wholesale business, which is experiencing explosive growth.

You will:

    • Build a pipeline of new retailer relationships, with the goal of building a several hundred million dollar annual sales business over the next four years.
    • Develop lasting relationships and influence with merchandising executives and buyers at large, national retailers, focused initially on building our wall art and greeting cards wholesale businesses. Prospective partners may include large retail chains in the home, lifestyle, grocery, mass, and drug channels.
    • Design and drive an efficient new partner sales process, including pipeline tracking and internal reporting, lead qualification, weekly internal sales reviews, communication to internal stakeholders. Work very closely with functional partners in Sales Operations, Account Management, Merchandising, Brand, and Supply Chain to land and launch new partnerships.
    • Explore distribution relationships with strategic partners and sales and marketing firms that can accentuate our sales team and help expedite our entry into new channels.
    • Create a go-to-market strategy that includes building awareness, consideration, and brand excitement among our prospective partners. Define the sales and marketing strategy that builds demand and increases our speed to sign new partnerships.
    • Work very closely with the executive team and CEO to craft the value proposition, sales strategy, and negotiation strategies for new partnerships.
    • Be willing to roll up your sleeves and sell directly into accounts in the early going. Also, be ready to scale yourself into a hands-on sales manager as we later build a sales team.

You are:

    • An exceptional written and verbal communicator. Able to present succinctly and persuasively to internal and external C-level officers and other busy decision-makers.
    • Disciplined and process-driven in your approach to sales and BD.
    • Highly analytical and conversant in quantitative modeling. You are very familiar with P&Ls or have managed a P&L in the past.
    • Savvy in negotiation strategy, building value for both parties, fluent in commercial contracts, and able to speak legalese with attorneys as needed.
    • Passionate about design, art, retail, and supporting independent artists.
    • A strategic, consumer-centric thinker.  You are a superb strategic thinker who has proven the ability to identify new opportunities.  You understand consumer segments deeply and intuitively, and you naturally gravitate to the consumer when answering questions or considering strategies.
    • Results oriented.  You are most comfortable in work environments which are outcome-oriented and merit-based, and are highly motivated by goal accomplishment.
    • A passionate customer advocate. You are ready to put the customer first and influence others across the company to think similarly.

You have:

    • 10+ years of work experience, including 5+ years of wholesale sales and/or BD experience.
    • Executive and buyer contacts at relevant national retailers and the ability and hunger to forge new relationships.
    • A track record of breaking into new accounts and relationships, building individual partnerships that generate 8-figures in annual sales.
    • Strong project management skills and ability to prioritize your time and projects on opportunities that will have outsized impact for the company.
    • BA and MBA required
    • Management consulting or investment banking experience (preferred)
