Description

ABOUT THE ROLE:
Udemy processes video uploads from over 42,000 instructors. We also deliver the processed videos to more than 30 million students across the world.
As a backend engineer on the video team, you will build scalable services that support uploading video lectures to Udemy, transcoding them and delivering them to our students.
 
The video team focuses on:
 Improving the instructor experience by reducing the end to end video processing time.
 Improving the student experience by encoding videos in efficient formats and delivering them across the entire globe.
 We are also responsible for work on anti-piracy methods, new codecs and formats, multiple language tracks, and live video.

Here’s what you’ll be doing:

    • Collaborating with product management and other engineering teams to define initiatives and features.
    • Developing, testing, documenting, releasing services that support Udemy's core marketplace and business offerings.
    • Planning, organizing, and getting work done in 2-week sprints.
    • Participating in code reviews as well as post-deployment site monitoring.
    • Mentoring team members in software development best practices and processes.
    • Leading by example and contribute to a team culture that values quality, robustness, and scalability while fostering innovation.
    • Researching and evaluating new technologies that may improve our processes or code bases.
    • At times, functioning as a technical lead for various projects/tasks. This may involve some project, resource, and deployment planning in addition to software engineering responsibilities.

We're excited about you because you have:

    • 5+ years of experience as a software engineer working on backend services for web (or mobile) applications, at least 2 years of which you served as a primary technical lead.
    • Knowledge of Object Oriented software design patterns and computer science fundamentals (e.g. data structures, algorithms).
    • Experience with Python or other scripting languages such as Ruby, PHP (minimum 2 years), etc.
    • Web application technologies, including HTML, CSS, and Javascript.
    • Experience with relational DB (e.g. MySQL) or NoSQL (e.g. Redis, MongoDB).
    • Experience with asynchronous task queues (RabbitMQ, Celery).
    • Services platforms (e.g., Kubernetes, Mesos, or Nomad) experience.
    • Knowledge of testing methods, including unit and integration tests.
    • Experience with Linux.
    • Networking knowledge.
    • Experience with AWS or competing cloud platform.

Nice to haves:

    • Experience working with video technologies and standards (e.g., FFmpeg, HLS).
    • Docker.
    • nginx.
    • Ansible, Terraform.
    • Web Frameworks (e.g. Django, Rails, Zend, etc).
    • Modern JS frameworks (ReactJS, VueJS, and so on) and modern CSS tooling (SASS, LESS).
