Software Engineer - Engineering Excellence, Office of the CTO

San Francisco, CA, US

At Uber, we ignite opportunity by setting the world in motion. We take on big problems to help drivers, riders, delivery partners, and eaters get moving in more than 600 cities around the world.

We welcome people from all backgrounds who seek the opportunity to help build a future where everyone and everything can move independently. If you have the curiosity, passion, and collaborative spirit, work with us, and let’s move the world forward, together.

About the Role

Engineers on the Engineering Excellence Task Force (EETF) tackle large-scale efforts that are vital to the success of the organization as a whole. They serve as the catalyzing force to ensure that these project reach a successful conclusion, orchestrating the efforts of multiple teams in order to achieve their goals.

EETF projects require deep architectural skill, an ability to weigh pros and cons between general solutions to difficult problems, and the aptitude to direct and implement systems that are robust and scalable enough to serve all of Uber Engineering both now and in the future.

What You’ll Do

EETF projects typically support company-wide efforts that require significant investments over 3 to 6 months. EETF engineers play a vital role operating at the center of each project performing the following tasks:

  • Develop overall architectural frameworks
  • Implement technically demanding proof-of-concepts
  • Facilitate communication and agreement between teams
  • Design company-wide processes that drive efficiency

What You’ll Need

  • Willingness and ability to understand and work in diverse codebases, and at senior levels, experience working in multiple code bases across Uber.
  • Exceptional strength in design and architecture.
  • Intuit the implementation of a feature or design without reading the code… Have a sense that something “must be implemented” a particular way. At the same time, recognize when detailed implementation knowledge is important.
  • Resolve ambiguous problem statements into tangible technical requirements and solutions.
  • Adaptability and willingness to work on whatever is most impactful and needed by engineering.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills to work with people from many different teams and when necessary drive alignment between them.
  • Self-starting: doesn’t wait for instructions to solve problems.

About the Team

The Office of the CTO (OCTO) Engineering Excellence Task Force (EETF) is a skilled, flexible group of engineers focused on looking at and solving problems that holistically affect Uber Engineering. We are a small team dedicated to tackling critical cross-org projects that can ensure Uber Engineering achieves its maximum potential.
