InfluxData is a fast-growing Series D startup developing InfluxDB, the time series database recognized industry-wide as the clear category leader. InfluxDB is running on hundreds of thousands of machines and used by teams worldwide to monitor and understand their systems. The majority of users are developers and builders utilizing our open source software, but we also offer enterprise and cloud SaaS products, all exposing a single unified API.
We’re looking for a person who has a passion for building great software. In this role, you will be a part of our growing and talented engineering organization, reporting to the Director, Foundation. You will work with various engineering teams to identify, revise, and put in place engineering Best Practices for our cloud, enterprise, and open source tick stack.
The mandate for engineering excellence includes hands-on ownership of our CI/CD, coding practices, lifecycle management, versioning, and any other process our engineering team requires, in order to maximize innovation and velocity for engineers while maintaining a consistent enterprise-grade experience for our customers. Do you know the best way to do uniform code commits, know how to generate KPI for code velocity, and want to put those procedures in place? What tools could you use to tell senior management about the state of various code repositories and end products? Do you like to find and learn existing neat tools and techniques within an organization, and help maximize their impact and utility more broadly?
Many InfluxData employees are *remote so you have your choice of working remote or out of our San Francisco office. (*From a remote perspective, we currently support the UK, Germany, Italy and the following US states: AZ, CA, CO, CT, GA, ID, IL, MA, MN, NC, NJ, NY, OH, OR, TX, UT, VA, WA.)
What You'll Be Doing:
Providing technical expertise within large-scale developer data platforms, with a well-informed point of view on engineering best practices. Collecting, creating, and using data effectively to make informed decisions, and enabling others across the organization to do the same as they develop products. Keeping pace with our OSS community and finding ways to let our OSS developers see results from their contributions.
You will be asked to guide our engineering teams as they absorb significant growth. Solving the tough problems Engineers have in the DevOps space is partially your problem to enable new employees to fit in faster and contribute more quickly. You will be asked to comment on and contribute to engineering standards but you will also get involved in restructuring problems for any of our languages, platforms, and products, and develop solutions over several weeks or months.
Many of the practices you introduce will require your time to write code, refactor code, restructure build practices across Engineering and on individual projects. Where OSS tools exist but are limited, you will be asked to create Influxdata specific variants, maintaining and improving features over time.
You will be asked to work with the Foundation Director and the Engineering Leadership Team to inform them which engineering areas require your attention. Foundations also include Performance and Quality Assurance Engineers, so those areas will not require as much of your attention.
What You'll Bring To The Team:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline, or equivalent real-world experience;
- Twelve years of software development experience;
- You have been a Software Architect or lead engineering processes for your team;
- You get stuff done and work independently;
- You are motivated by delivering great outcomes and capabilities - the rest is a means to that end;
- Strong bias for action, with the ability to handle ambiguity and take on tasks necessary to succeed. We are a startup!
A Plus If:
- You practice Engineering discipline following the latest practices ;
- Data manipulation such as SQL query and other data languages;
- IoT, monitoring, logging, or other high volumes, high scale data activities;
- Linux and open source development;
- Large-scale distributed systems;
- SaaS engineering and operations;
- Live service monitoring and operations.
