Director of Tax at Udemy

Reporting to the VP of Finance, the Director of Tax will oversee all tax related matters including income tax accounting, tax compliance, and tax planning and strategy.  This role will require a technical hands on candidate that is detail oriented, with strong organizational and communication skills. This newly created position will be crucial in guiding the Company through strategic tax planning, compliance related projects and audit readiness as the Company embarks on the next stage of growth and operational maturity. The ideal candidate is a big-picture, strategic thinker with a roll-up their sleeves and execute mindset, strong technical and analytical skills, and demonstrated acumen in both domestic and international tax. This is a key leadership role and will require collaboration across Finance and cross-functional leadership teams.

Here’s what you’ll be doing:

    • Responsible for all aspects of the Company’s US federal and global direct and indirect tax compliance and planning, and the accounting for income taxes under US GAAP
    • Develop and implement a global tax strategy and structure as the Company continues to expand its global footprint and present global tax strategies to executive management and leadership team
    • Design critical tax accounting processes and implement technology improvements related to tax compliance and reporting
    • Manage the tax function of the company including one staff, as well as consultants used to assist in tax preparation and complex tax matters
    • Establish and maintain formal tax policies, practices and procedures to ensure US GAAP compliance and strong internal controls
    • Develop and implement global indirect tax policies, procedures and internal controls for a large multi-national company
    • Manage indirect tax compliance requirements and related processes
    • Manage global transfer pricing strategy
    • Collaborate with external tax advisors located worldwide to implement global tax strategies
    • Forecasting and analysis of quarterly and annual effective tax rates
    • Drive the resolution of tax issues related to audits, mergers and acquisitions, and new business initiatives
    • Develop tax controls and document process to ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404
    • Provide guidance on proposed and enacted tax legislation, keeping abreast of tax law changes in the US and foreign jurisdictions to manage risk and identify potential planning opportunities
    • Work alongside the VP of Finance, Corporate Controller, Treasury, FP&A, Legal and other cross-functional leaders across the Company on projects related to challenges we will face as a growing, multi-national Company

We’re excited about you because you have:

    • Bachelor of Science in Accounting or Finance
    • Minimum of 10-12 years of tax experience and international tax experience, in public accounting or multi-national corporate tax departments, with 3 at least years in a director or head of tax role
    • Strong understanding and working knowledge of U.S. GAAP accounting for income taxes
    • Strong technical knowledge of income tax, accounting for income taxes (e.g. ASC 740, ASC 450)
    • Track record of managing service providers to ensure work is completed on time, with quality, and on budget
    • Professional and positive communication and organizational skills, including an ability to clearly explain complex concepts to non-accounting personnel
    • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to plan and execute at strategic and tactical levels
    • Public accounting and public company experience preferred
    • Experience working with foreign offices or subsidiaries preferred
