Boost’s infrastructure-as-a-service product, IaaS for short, abstracts and simplifies an old school, complicated industry – and unlocks access to it through a cutting-edge API platform. What does that mean? That’s ‘abstracted and simplified’ language for insurance stuff like ‘A’-rated insurance paper, dedicated risk capacity to pay claims, and ongoing policy and claims administration – but it’s all powered programmatically by our back-end API-driven systems. Technically we’re a licensed managing general agency, we’re just redefining what that means.

The Job
Join a high growth and dynamic startup for the opportunity to make an immediate impact on our financial strategy as we continue to optimize on all fronts! Reporting directly to the CEO, the Head/VP of Finance will play a critical role in developing and owning the financial strategy and ongoing financial management for Boost as we continue through a phase of hyper growth. The role will own the task of establishing strong foundational practices for Boost’s insurance-specific and company-level financial reporting processes to ensure our long term success.
We are looking for a proven executive or high-octane and ambitious achiever to lead all aspects of our financial needs in close collaboration with our CEO and Founder. The ideal candidate is highly motivated by building businesses, comfortable working in a dynamic startup environment, and has the willingness to get in the weeds to execute all day-to-day financial responsibilities. This is a critical position for the company, so candidates should not only be excited about making an immediate impact on a high-growth startup, but also long term goals-orientated and passionate about taking on a leadership role as we build something special over the long haul.


      • Financial Strategy and Planning
      • Report directly to the CEO and serve as a strategic thinking financial business partner to the senior leadership team
      • Assess and evaluate financial performance of organization with regard to long-term operational goals, budgets and forecasts
      • Provide insight and recommendations to both short-term and long-term growth plan of organization
      • Provide advice on ideal capital allocation and help raise capital including generating fundraising materials and cultivating new funding relationships
      • Negotiate and manage company’s credit facilities and debt instruments
      • Manage corporate development, including strategic partnerships and M&A
      • Oversee competitive intelligence and provide regular updates to key stakeholders
      • Create and establish monthly, quarterly, and annual financial objectives that align with the company’s plans for growth and expansion
      • Utilize forward-looking models and results-based analyses to provide financial insight into the organization’s short, medium, and long-term plans and their respective operating budgets
      • Identify, acquire and implement systems and software to provide critical financial and operational information. Evaluate business and make suggestions for automating processes and increasing working efficiency
      • Recruit, interview and hire finance, accounting and finance as required.
      • Contribute to strategy and methods used to attain team goals, OKRs, and KPIs and track those metrics in collaboration with key internal stakeholders
      • Communicate, engage and interact with Board of Directors, CEO, and other C-suite leadership.
      • Explore and evaluate new investment opportunities or financing options and provide recommendations on potential returns and risks of either
      • Select and engage consultants, auditors and other key vendors as needed
    • Financial Analysis, Budgeting, and Accounting
    • Prepare and present monthly financial budgeting reports to senior management including monthly profit and loss statements, forecast vs. budget analyses, and various projection scenarios
    •  Own and oversee cash management, accounts payable, and accounts receivable and provide guidance relating to payment and invoicing processes
    • Review all month-end closing activities including general ledger accounts, balance sheet accounts and overhead cost allocation
    • Develop, maintain, and report all monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
    • Supervise and execute the creation of reports, software implementations, and tools for financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting
    • Ensure the timeliness and accuracy of financial and management reporting data for internal and external stakeholders
    • Oversee the preparation and timely filing of all local, state and federal tax returns and reporting requirements
    • Remain current on audit best practices as well as state, federal and local laws regarding company operations

Job Requirements

    • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or finance
    • 10+ years total accounting or finance experience
    • Background at a Big 4 public accounting firm, top tier investment bank, insurance carrier/reinsurer/ILS manager, or insurtech/fintech company
    • Experience working in a senior role at a startup with recently demonstrated ability to get in the weeds is strongly preferred
    • Expert knowledge and understanding of GAAP and statutory accounting and reporting
    • Intermediate-to-advanced knowledge of property and casualty (P&C) insurance accounting and financial concepts
    • Management experience in a finance/accounting role within a financial services company
    • Outstanding quantitative skills and expert proficiency in Excel
    • Excellent analytical, reasoning and problem-solving skills
    • Significant experience working with external auditors, internal controls, and compliance-related issues
    • Outstanding communication and presentation skills with experience presenting to senior leadership and board of directors
    • Demonstrated leadership skills, confidence, and ability to motivate teams and create a positive work environment
    • Background coordinating with technology teams to develop, manage, and/or upgrade accounting systems
    • Willing to work in New York City full-time or relocate
    • Authorized to work in the United States

Extra Credit

    • CPA not required, but preferred
    • MBA from top business school not required, but preferred
    • Experience with agency billing/accounting, premium earning, (re)insurance reserving, and insurance-linked securities (ILS) origination a plus
    • Hands on experience working with data visualization tools, such as Looker, Tableau, and Microsoft Office to analyze large, complex data sets and create detailed reports
    • Experience developing tools and reports using a variety of database applications and programming languages such as SQL and Python
    • Comfortable using software and other technology applications in the workplace to reduce manual paper-based processes
    • Working knowledge of insurtech and insurance innovation trends and interest in the startup industry
    • Previous experience working at startups or tech companies
