Software Engineer - AV Maps

San Francisco, CA, US

At ATG, we are ambitious, engaged and excited about transforming the way the world moves. With locations in Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Toronto, the Advanced Technologies Group is comprised of Uber’s self-driving engineering team dedicated to self-driving technologies, mapping, and vehicle safety. Our teams are passionate about developing long-term technologies that advance Uber’s mission of bringing safe, reliable transportation to everyone, everywhere.

Our work doesn’t end with transporting people. We are also developing self-driving truck technology to move goods more safely and cost effectively around the world. We are working to make the process of moving people and goods safer and more efficient.

The self-driving vehicle Maps team is looking for experienced software engineers who have a solid grasp of user interface fundamentals as full-stack developers for our suite of internal Web tools.

You will get a chance to use your skills to solve some of the toughest problems Uber faces in the geo-spatial domain using state-of-the-art compute infrastructure and tools. And all this while rubbing shoulders with some of the best scientists and engineers looking to revolutionize transportation at Uber.
Who you are

A fast learner. We're looking for team members who thrive on applying their knowledge, learning new technologies and don't believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. You should be able to adapt easily to meet the exciting pace of a rapidly evolving research, development, and testing environment.
You take action. You think a working proof-of-concept is the best way to make a point. You thrive on the belief that quality doesn't have to be compromised to achieve speed-you can have both at the same time.
Versatile. In addition to having an intimate knowledge of core engineering fields, you understand how all the pieces fit together into integrated systems, and how they impact performance.
Passionate. You feel ownership over everything you ship; you'd never call code or design "released" until you're sure it's correct. You pride yourself on efficient monitoring, excellent documentation, and proper test coverage.
A team player. You believe that you can achieve more on a team - that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. You rely on others' candid feedback for continuous improvement.
You have design and business acumen. You understand how your technical contributions will influence the viability of future products. Whether you're working on a software library used by other developers, building a new datacenter abstraction layer, or sensor to be retrofitted on a test vehicle, the other members of the team can depend on the quality of your work to rapidly advance our goals.

What you'll need

Experience in full-stack development using Web technologies such as React/Redux to build reusable components that fit together in scalable production applications.
Strong sense of web UX, with experience building intuitive interfaces that present data in compelling ways.
At least three years programming experience in Java or an equivalent object-oriented language.
A firm grasp of data structure and algorithm fundamentals and how to apply them in real-world applications.
Strong algorithmic and analytical skills. Familiarity with information retrieval, data integration or machine learning are a plus.
Design and development experience building and using REST API services.
Experience selecting SQL and NoSQL solutions for Web infrastructure and a keen awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of each when designing solutions.
Previous experience developing bespoke applications for data entry, data visualization and manipulation is a plus.
Bonus points for experience with MapReduce or distributed processing.
Extra large bonus points for experience with geospatial datasets and services, such as maps, local search, points of interest and business listings data, mobile device location and GPS traces.
MS in computer science preferred but not required.
