About the role Uber is looking for a Technical Knowledge Management Leader in San Francisco to develop, lead, and grow our global technical writing and software engineering training teams. This will be a senior leadership role, starting initially with an organization of about 18. This role will effectively transform technical knowledge into repeatable ideas, products, processes, and solutions that create value for Uber developers and technical managers. The right leader will maximize returns on investment in knowledge (people, processes and intellectual capital), harness our intangible assets (know-how, developer relationships, employee success, etc.), repeat successes, share best practices, improve innovation, and increase productivity. We are seeking a proven leader with a solid track record of thinking big and leading KM initiatives to capture, manage, and disseminate knowledge across large software engineering organizations, leading to enhanced productivity and organizational leverage. A strong background building a leading successful KM programs and engineering L&D teams - including the requisite technical documentation, content, tooling, process, and infrastructure - is required. What You’ll Do Be the thought leader and visionary. You will drive organizational change through collaboration while empowering others to take action and risk. You have a strong vision and plan for the future, and seek solutions from effective influencers. Lead team against your defined vision, prioritize, deploy people to the right initiatives, and track your programs. Be a developer advocate passionate about delivering world-class learning solutions to engineers at Uber. Define day to day challenges developers face - collect that information and bring it back to teams for solutions. Closely collaborate with your managers as they lead and manage multiple, simultaneous training and documentation projects which span across different organizations from planning and estimation, through development, delivery, and maintenance. Provide strategy, vision, and roadmaps for developer-focused learning products girding the training and documentation requirements for engineering organizations across Uber. Collaborate with managers in designing unified content strategy for self-service content that places user success at the center. Understand the end-to-end user journey — from product development to usage to support needs — and drive the compelling and scalable learning products in forms that can be made readily-available for engineering audience -- new and advanced users -- at any touchpoint where they might need help. Articulate user needs and define business requirements for platforms and tools that accelerate and improve the health of knowledge-sharing. Bring knowledge of existing platforms and tools, and know how to advise development of home-grown versions or enhancements where appropriate. Roll up sleeves on the technical side (ex: translate request for in-house mobile development training into an effective offering), and mentor others in how to understand Engineering Teams’ needs and the subsequent build of their needed training programs. Continue to iterate upon and develop robust engineering management and leadership training. Track, monitor, and analyze feedback from learners, presenters, and managers. What You’ll Need Proven leadership and strategic visioning in knowledge management, technical content development, and technical writing. Proven track record of innovating learning solutions and tools. Management experience with teams of 20 or more including mentoring and career development passion. Strong software and product development life cycle (SDLC and PDLC) knowledge and on-the-job exposure which translates directly to understanding how to build desired new training content and programs requested from Engineering. Experience working with business partners and engineers to gather, understand, and bridge technical definitions and requirements. Familiarity with relevant technologies (ex: Java, Go, Python Kafka, Cassandra, Hadoop, Hive, Spark, AWS, data visualization, iOS, Android, React, Node.js, microservices, asynchronous, etc.) Familiarity with different LMS systems: Uber Learning is on Absorb with a custom-built front-end. Technical Knowledge Enthusiast Mindset: Experience creating engaging and interactive training and documentation for engineers on a global scale. Process and optimization focus. You will participate in revolutionizing support for the Uber Engineering community. You’re excited about the opportunity to create and experiment with support processes, and are capable of driving global changes to processes. A passion for the education and learning space. Experience developing, tracking, and communicating OKR’s, KPI’s, ROI, and other key metrics to support work and show effectivity. Experience with Confluence and Google Analytics and Tableau (used at Uber) or similar, ie: MediaWiki, WordPress, Oxygen. About the Team Engineering Training and Technical Writing are based in San Francisco with a few team members in other locations. Our mission is to empower Uber engineers with the training, documentation and tools to make better decisions more quickly. The team is responsible for deeply engaging with the engineering organization and embedding into teams and partnering with engineers to create solutions. They are very hands on, technical and passionate about empowering engineering.
